Why we are here?
Whilst public debate regarding the Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) implication of nanomaterials has to date been relatively muted, some degree of public disquiet has already been generated by visions of a “grey goo” of self-replicating nano-machines or “nanobots“. As nanomaterials become more general in their application, such concerns are likely to become more widespread, particularly those associated with their synthesis, processing, use in application and disposal.
It is both vital that nanomaterial SHE concerns are addressed on a factual basis underpinned by sound science and that industry is seen to be taking a proactive and responsible stance in addressing potential consumer and societal concerns. For the exploitation of nanomaterials and nanotechnology to be successful, it is imperative that the health and safety of people exposed to nanomaterials or nano-enabled products is demonstrably safeguarded throughout the product life cycle (ie from cradle to grave).
AssuredNano™ exists to overcome the obstacles to nanomaterial commercialisation resulting from SHE concerns. AssuredNano offers, for the first time, a way for responsible manufacturers to address nanomaterial SHE concerns based upon the use of good current practice. In so doing it provides a demonstration to all stakeholders in nanomaterials and nanotechnology that SHE issues are being taken seriously and tackled responsibly and that the health and safety of people exposed to nanomaterials or nano-enabled products will be ensured. Most importantly, AssuredNano is designed by industry experienced SHE experts to deliver a commonsense and realistic approach to nanomaterial SHE.
